Indiana Downtown Economic Development Project
This multi-phase revitalization project is currently under construction. The project is comprised of eight city blocks in Indiana, PA’s downtown street corridor. With the goal in mind of increasing safety and establishing a pedestrian-oriented district, the city wanted to maintain a positive, green image. The city opted to use Xeripave Super Pervious (SP) Pavers in tree surround applications within the sidewalk. Due to Xeripave's high infiltration rate of around one gallon per second per square foot, the pavers can be used with impervious or permeable surfaces.
SP Pavers are providing a versatile solution with the city. The Xeripave tree surrounds provide tree roots with aeration and nutrients, while also offering an ADA slip and skid resistant surface.
Improvements for this project include construction of new sidewalks, curb and gutter, ADA ramps, landscaping and retaining walls, historic style street lights, traffic signals and street signage, along with street pavements. The street corridor improvements have been instrumental in re-establishing a positive image, reducing municipal maintenance costs, encouraging re-investments in buildings and businesses, increasing safety, and enhancing quality of life in the downtown district.
City of Windsor Addresses Clay Soil Issues with Low Impact Development Projects
The City of Windsor has been tackling stormwater runoff head on. With poor clay soil conditions, flooding has been an issue within the city. In particular, stores lining the shopping district on Erie Street have felt the hardships of this stormwater runoff. The shops have experienced flooding during storm events when the sewer system overflowed.
To address this problem, the city re-graded and extended the sidewalk. Catch basins were installed to assist with stormwater management. In lue of metal grates, Xeripave Super Pervious (SP) Pavers were utilized in the catch basins to provide an environmentally friendly and safe pedestrian surface that would prevent any trip/fall hazards. The Xeripave catch basins are capturing stormwater runoff while allowing the rainwater to flow directly through the surface of the pervious paver and leaving behind gross urban pollutants.
Since Xeripave was installed the city has not had a flooding incident in the project area.
